Expanding in Algebra (Cambridge IGCSE)

  • Expanding is the process of multiplying out terms in brackets or expressions with variables.
  • To expand (a + b)², multiply each term in the brackets and add them together: (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b².
  • To expand (a - b)³, use the formula: (a - b)³ = a³ - 3a²b + 3ab² - b³.
  • Expand expressions with more than two terms using the distributive property.
  • Expand expressions with multiple sets of brackets by working from the innermost brackets outwards.
  • Exam Tip: Practice expanding a variety of expressions to become fluent and identify common patterns.
