Types of Forces

  • **Contact Forces**: Forces that require physical contact between objects (e.g. friction, normal force, tension).
  • **Non-Contact Forces**: Forces that act without physical contact (e.g. gravitational, magnetic, electrostatic).
  • **Balanced Forces**: When the net force on an object is zero, the forces are said to be balanced.
  • **Unbalanced Forces**: When the net force on an object is not zero, the forces are said to be unbalanced, causing the object to accelerate.
  • **Exam Tip**: Be able to identify and distinguish between different types of forces in a given scenario.
