Perimeter and Area

Revision Notes

Key Points

  • Perimeter is the total distance around a closed shape
  • Area is the total space inside a closed shape
  • Formulas exist for calculating perimeter and area of common shapes like rectangles, triangles, and circles
  • Perimeter formulas involve adding side lengths, while area formulas involve multiplying dimensions
  • Understanding and applying these formulas is crucial for solving mensuration problems in IGCSE Mathematics

Definition of Perimeter and Area

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a closed shape.

Area is the total space inside a closed shape.

Formulas for Common Shapes

Rectangles

  • Perimeter = 2 × (length + width)
  • Area = length × width

Triangles

  • Perimeter = length of side 1 + length of side 2 + length of side 3
  • Area = 1/2 × base × height

Circles

  • Perimeter (Circumference) = π × diameter
  • Area = π × radius^2
